At the Ponderosa, we believe sound environmental practices and sound business practices go hand-in-hand. While producing our quality, farmstead cheese, we are also focused on maintaining our family’s legacy of land stewardship. We strive to be progressive in our practices to ensure our family farm remains a viable business for future generations.
Nutrient Optimization & Management
Pagel’s Ponderosa employs a certified crop and soil consultant who helps maintain the health of the land and for optimum plant growth and land conservatism.
For approximately six months of the year, crops are grown on the Ponderosa to feed and nourish the animals.
Manure Management & Recycling
We take pride in the complete ecosystem we’ve developed on the Ponderosa. Our fertile land grows our herd’s feed so they can produce milk, and, in turn, their nutrient-rich waste is given back to the land in the most eco-friendly way possible.
Methane-Based Green Energy
Our anaerobic digester system transforms manure from our 5,000 cows into methane gas. The methane then powers a generator and creates electricity. With the electricity generated from the digester, Pagel’s Ponderosa can almost power the entire neighboring city of Kewaunee—a town of 3,000 people!
